Continuous Feed Disposals
Updated February 20, 2026
The most common type — activated by a wall switch and runs continuously while food waste is fed in. Convenient for large amounts of food prep waste.
Overview
Continuous feed disposals are the standard type. Flip a wall switch, the motor runs, and you feed scraps in while water flows. The most popular and widely available disposal type -- 90%+ of residential installations. Available from 1/3 HP (budget, light use) to 1 HP (premium, heavy use). Higher HP grinds faster, handles tougher scraps, and jams less. The motor runs as long as the switch is on, so you can process scraps continuously during meal prep and cleanup.
Pros & Cons
- Convenient operation
- Handles large loads
- Most popular type
- Affordable
- Safety risk with open drain
- Can splash
- Requires wall switch
Key Features
- Wall switch activation -- motor runs continuously while the switch is on
- Feed scraps while the unit is running for fast, efficient processing
- Available in 1/3, 1/2, 3/4, and 1 HP -- widest range of any disposal type
- Sound insulation varies by model -- premium units are significantly quieter
- Standard 3.5 inch mount fits most sink drain openings
Sizing & Selection
1/3 HP: 1-2 person household, soft foods only. 1/2 HP: average household, handles most food scraps. 3/4 HP: larger families, tougher scraps including small bones and fruit pits. 1 HP: heavy use, fibrous foods, fastest grinding. Always size up if in doubt -- a more powerful motor jams less and lasts longer.
Installation
Mounts to the sink drain flange with a quick-lock or twist-on ring. Connect the discharge to the drain pipe (dishwasher inlet knockout if applicable). Wire to a dedicated switch on the wall or countertop air switch. A dedicated 15-amp or 20-amp circuit is recommended. Most replacements take 1-2 hours.
Maintenance
- Always run cold water before, during, and after grinding. Cold water solidifies grease so it gets chopped up instead of coating the chamber.
- Grind ice cubes monthly to clean the grinding plate and impellers.
- Never put grease, oil, pasta, rice, coffee grounds, or fibrous vegetables down the disposal.
- If it jams, use the hex wrench (included) in the bottom port to manually rotate the grinding plate.
Buying Tips
- InSinkErator and Waste King dominate the market. Both are reliable -- InSinkErator has more models, Waste King is often better value.
- 1/2 HP is the minimum for most households. 1/3 HP units jam frequently and frustrate users.
- Sound insulation matters more than you think. Premium units (-300) are dramatically quieter than budget units (-120).
- Stainless steel grinding components last longer than galvanized steel. Check the spec sheet.
- An air switch (-50) mounted on the countertop is more convenient than a wall switch and does not require electrical work in the wall.
