Batch Feed Disposals
Updated February 20, 2026
Activated by placing a stopper in the drain opening. Processes food in batches rather than continuously. Safer for families with children.
Overview
Batch feed disposals only activate when you insert and turn a special stopper in the drain opening. No wall switch. This makes them safer -- impossible to accidentally turn on while hands are near the grinding chamber. Ideal for homes with children, or kitchens where you prefer to load scraps, cover, then grind. Slightly slower workflow than continuous feed since you process one batch at a time, but the safety advantage is significant.
Pros & Cons
- Safer operation
- No wall switch needed
- Good for families
- Slower processing
- More expensive
- Less convenient for large loads
Key Features
- Activated by a magnetic or twist stopper -- no wall switch needed
- Cannot run with the drain open, preventing accidental contact with grinding elements
- Same HP ratings and grinding capability as continuous feed models
- No electrical switch installation required -- simpler wiring
- Stopper doubles as a sink drain cover when disposal is not in use
Sizing & Selection
Same sizing as continuous feed: 1/3 HP for light use (1-2 person household), 1/2 HP for average use, 3/4 HP or 1 HP for heavy use or fibrous foods. Mount size is standard -- fits most sink drain openings (3.5 inch). Check under-sink cabinet space for the disposal body height and width.
Installation
Mounts to the sink drain flange the same way as continuous feed. The difference: wiring connects directly to a plug or hardwired connection without a wall switch. The stopper mechanism is built into the disposal throat. Installation takes 1-2 hours if replacing an existing disposal, longer if installing new.
Maintenance
- Run with cold water and a few ice cubes monthly to clean the grinding elements.
- Grind citrus peels occasionally to freshen the chamber.
- Never put grease, bones, or fibrous vegetables (celery, artichoke) in any disposal.
- Clean the stopper mechanism monthly -- food debris can prevent proper engagement.
Buying Tips
- Fewer models available than continuous feed -- InSinkErator and Waste King are the main options.
- Expect to pay 10-20% more than equivalent continuous feed models due to lower production volume.
- The stopper is a wear item -- verify replacement stoppers are available for the model you choose.
- If safety is the primary concern but you want continuous feed workflow, consider a continuous feed model with an air switch (mounted on the countertop) instead of a wall switch.
